The early weeks of the coronavirus pandemic came with an avalanche of never-before-seen images: from 3-D models of the novel virus to empty supermarkets and hastily constructed field hospitals. But the pandemic was not experienced in one universal way. This fourteen-minute film—commissioned for a public program in celebration of Earth Day in late April 2020—was influenced by Charles and Ray Eames’s seminal Powers of Ten (1977), which employed the system of exponential powers to visualize scale, from the edges of the universe to a carbon atom
