Are We Human?
The Design of the Species: 2 Seconds, 2 Days, 2 Years, 200 Years, 200,000 Years

Eds. Beatriz Colomina and Mark Wigley, Lars Muller, 2016

The 3rd Istanbul Design Biennial, Are We Human?, began as a public venue way before its opening in 2016. It started in 2015 as a space of interaction, exchange, debate, and controversy through social media when the eight propositions of the Biennial’s curatorial statement were presented and discussed with a wide audience. Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Pinterest, and Tumblr, among other platforms that were used during the exhibition’s creation, performed an essential role. These sites were used not only to give basic information about the exhibition (venue, participants, contents), but also to interact with an international community and build up a collective knowledge on the relationship between design and the construction of human beings. For more than a year, the news cycle was tested around the subject of the Biennial: geopolitical struggles, gender-identity questions, economic news, environmental cataclysms, medical and technological debates, or administrative discussions concerning the body were highlighted, presented, and handled to convey a space of exchange
